Job Description Summary
The Senior Scientist plays an active role, both individually and as part of a team, in developing, qualifying and supporting diagnostic products for use in the clinical microbiology laboratory.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works under the general direction of a Staff Scientist or R&D Manager.
Works independently, or as part of a team, to design, schedule and perform a variety of laboratory experiments, especially involving automated culture systems and products.
Accurately records experimental results and may assist with data analysis, presenting results to others, and recommending next steps.
Leads a small team in specific assignments as needed.
Partners with R&D colleagues, and associates from other departments, on project tasks, platform support, and other activities when required.
Drafts formal study protocols and manufacturing procedures.
Applies appropriate technical principles and concepts to assist in problem and CAPA resolution.
Be willing to become a member and participate in outside organizations (CLSI, ASM, etc.).
Serves as an R&D microbiology representative on cross-functional teams and a liaison between R&D department and manufacturing sites or raw materials vendors.
Strives to remain current with the field and related technology developments.
Strong understanding and knowledge of clinical microbiology products and their manufacture.
Experience with automated clinical microbiology systems.
Good working comprehension of FDA, GMP and GLP guidelines and regulations; Six Sigma experience is a plus.
Hands-on experience with developing, manufacturing and troubleshooting clinical products.
Proficiency with commercial computer software applications (spreadsheets, databases, word processing, etc.); experience with statistical software and SAP are highly desirable.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; spoken and written Spanish is a plus.
Technical writing experience (SOPs, SMPs, validation protocols, etc.).
Product and production equipment testing and validation study experience is highly desirable.
Experience with QA and QC principles, practices and protocols is highly desirable.
Supervisory experience is a plus.
Manufacturing background, specifically production line operation and troubleshooting, is a plus.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Minimum requirement is a Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, chemical engineering, medical technology or a related field, with at least 5 years of relevant clinical or industrial experience.
