Job Description SummaryThe Systems Engineering, Senior Director (SE) is responsible for leadership and management of a team of engineers an scientists chartered with architecture, design, integration and characterization of complex cell analysis systems and solutions for both research and clinical diagnostics markets. The system engineering group functions as the hub of product development within the R&D organization defining the direction of product architecture, performance requirements, interfaces, subsystem tradeoffs and traceability of design control requirements. The system engineering group will work closely with Design Assurance Engineering Team which has responsibility for Verification, Validation and Reliability testing of products in development as well as with other functional groups responsible for design and development of various modules and subsystems of the overall products and systems.

Job Description

The Systems Engineering, Senior Director provides leadership to the team and ensures the requirements of the projects/contracts are met. She/He is responsible for leading the team that has primary accountability for both the definition and management of requirements for complex life science systems and for characterization of those systems that leads to verification and validation. Members of the SE team are experienced systems engineers and scientists who understand customer needs and workflow, systems architecture and analysis, and how the different component sub-systems fit and interact together to realize the desired customer function and experience. The SE team works with Marketing, HW, SW, Reagents and Verification & Validation as it shepherds products from requirements to breadboards to prototypes, leading characterization and integration of the system from the component sub-systems, and finally into production.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Sets the vision for a word class life sciences systems engineering capability, formulates strategic and tactical plans / roadmaps to implement this vision over a well defined period.

  • Works closely with program managers and system engineering core team members to ensure proper resourcing, expertise and functional support is provided to each new product development core team.

  • Actively works to attract, recruit, retain and develop top talent to build a best in class capability.

  • As a member of the R&D Leadership team, The Systems Engineering, Senior Director collaborates with other leaders to drive the overall strategic objectives of R&D and broader business.

  • Frequently interacts with other senior functional leaders, including Marketing, Program Management, Operations, Quality, Business Platforms, Medical, and Regulatory to ensure that the systems under development meet overall business needs.

  • Manages within budgetary boundaries defined by the fiscal year budget and quarterly forecasts.

  • Works on complex problems where analysis of data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors.

  • Introduce and institutionalize value-added systems engineering practices into BD

  • Models best in class systems engineering functional excellence

  • Iterative top down design - Requirements training, architecture definition and decomposition

  • Bottom-up Integration - Improve test planning, add integration concept

  • Life cycle approach - Firm up support for existing base and enhancements

  • Responsible for the stewardship of the SE processes and methodologies, ensuring consistent application across all programs and the continuous improvement of the processes including:

  • Requirements Management

  • Risk Management

  • Design Technical Management & Reviews

  • System Defect Tracking

  • Integration & Test

  • Characterization

  • Establish departmental tasks and priorities necessary to meet program objectives, including monitoring cost/schedule/staffing performance to plan.

  • Participates in Design and Technical Reviews to ensure customers’ needs are satisfied and designs are consistent with systems-level requirement.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of a MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Science, Hardware Engineering, Software Engineering or a related field.

  • Prior direct experience in design and development of complex instrumentation and systems in the life sciences industry or related field.

  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in a functional leadership role and/or leading a Multidisciplinary Engineering team.

  • Minimum 7 years of product development experience in flow cytometry or other clinical/research instrumentation and reagent systems of similar complexity

  • Education and / or experience in Immunology, Cell Biology or a related scientific discipline highly desirable.

  • Advanced degree preferred.

  • Minimum of 3 year of relevant industry experience in a regulated environment.

  • Demonstrated team management and leadership skills for complex programs.

  • Willingness to travel up to 25% of the time (global).

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Has up to date Systems Engineering skills and product development knowledge.

  • Ability to create, maintain and improve Systems processes and documents including SOPs and desk procedures.

  • Ability to manage departmental budget, resources and their assignment to multiple programs.

  • Has experience with tools for managing customer, system, and subsystem level requirements

  • Experience with requirements development, design & testing.

  • Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) Green Belt or higher is a plus.
