The New Product Development Program Director is responsible for ensuring the overall success of a major, multi-year, and highly complex new product development program, within BD Biosciences that will drive the business strategy over the next 10 years. Specifically, the incumbent will leverage best practices in cross-functional team leadership and phase gate based new product development to drive excellence in the following areas:

  • customer requirement definition

  • product design and development

  • full commercial launch

In this exciting, highly visible and impactful role, the successful candidate will lead a senior level, cross-functional core team driving accountability and commitment in the delivery of this transformational program.

This is a key critical role in the BD Biosciences PMO, with direct visibility and interaction with the executive leadership of the BD Biosciences business, the Life Sciences Segment and C Suite of Becton Dickinson and Company.

We are seeking an innovative, passionate, and highly capable individual with a proven record of accomplishment of sustained success in the execution of complex cross-functional new product development programs. Through the deployment of best practices in program management, visual based management methods and lean principles the successful candidate will demonstrate the highest levels of leadership, impact & drive for results.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leadership of the product development program roadmap ensuring each element of the overall pipeline is delivered on time while optimizing the market window, customer requirements, product release strategies and competitive advantage. Ensure alignment across product value proposition, program scope, and strategic business objectives.

  • Hold core and extended team members accountable for the creation and delivery of program goals and milestones. Establish clear roles and responsibilities, individual and team goals and deliverables, inspire the entire team to achieve the highest levels of performance.

  • Define program resource needs and negotiate program resourcing plans. Work with functional leaders to ensure the appropriate core team resources are committed to the program and contribute to required performance levels.

  • Lead the team to prepare for Phase Gate and other Go/No-Go decisions by BD Biosciences Executive leadership, ensuring such decisions are informed by a clearly articulated representation of program risks, mitigation actions and reward realization. Recommend ideal course of action, including budget and resource allocation, to deliver the program in a timely and cost-effective manner.

  • Develop and monitor progress against an accurate overall integrated platform program plan with measurable milestones and goals that form the basis of functional workstreams and deliverables. Create and leverage lean principles and visual based management tools for timely and effective communication mechanisms within the program team and to BDB Executive leadership.

  • Ensure internal governance mechanisms, such as core team meetings, key technical design and commercial excellence and industrialization reviews are undertaken in a timely, comprehensive and effective manner. Develop a mentality of collaboration, execution and continuous improvement within the program.

  • Lead cross-functional teams through problem resolution including root cause analysis, corrective and preventive action. Constructively challenge the team and the organization to rethink assumptions and approach headwinds in new ways. Independently determine and pursue courses of action necessary to obtain desired results.

  • Ensure effective formal and informal communication mechanisms with the core and extended team members using a variety of tools and channels. Build high morale and ensure the entire team commits to the target goals and objectives by creating a common purpose and direction.

  • Lead, direct, coach, and mentor core and extended team members plus any project/program managers assigned to support the New Product Development Program Director. Ensure a mentality of continuous improvement throughout the program. Provide meaningful and regular feedback to functional leaders regarding the contribution of core team members,

Knowledge and Skills

  • Expertise in cross-functional team leadership delivering critical business goals within a phase-gate based product development process. Demonstrated experience in balancing the application and benefits of different approaches to product development (e.g. waterfall, agile, sprint based) to maximize velocity yet maintain rigor and structure.

  • Develops and deploys visual program management tools and techniques including methods for tracking progress, risk management and delivery of major milestones. Demonstrated success in the application of lean, Sixsigma and daily (project) management tools and techniques to drive cohesion, accountability and velocity.

Looks at the big picture and the long range with an instinct for trade-offs (i.e. user experience vs. technical aspects / short vs. long term / risk vs. reward / resources vs. budget).

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in a technical field required, an MBA or other advanced business/management degree preferred. PMP certification or equivalent beneficial.

Minimum of 15-20 years of experience in successfully leading complex, multiyear new product development programs delivered through high performing, cross-functional, teams based in a matrix organization.

Experience in medical device or life science industries advantageous, management of whole systems development covering hardware, firmware, software and reagents preferred.

Exceptional analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills coupled to strong business, strategic and financial acumen.

Highly effective interpersonal skills on a cross-cultural level with excellent oral, presentation and written communication skills, including engagement with Executive level management

Exceptional leadership qualities consistently delivering results. Inspirational and motivational balancing accountability with mentorship and support. Strategic and yet able to comprehend and manage details. Expert in balancing risk with progress and a timely path for escalation.
