BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) Production - Chemist III in San Diego, California

Job Description SummaryThe Production Chemist III is responsible for the manufacture of Sirigen products, including polymer synthesis, post-polymerization modifications, polymer purification, and polymer processing. Additionally, the Production Chemist II will support the scale-up, documentation, and process improvements with their technical knowledge in polymer chemistry. This position will be expected to execute responsibilities with a large degree of autonomy requiring minimal oversight by immediate manager. Individual must be comfortable working in cross-functional teams under defined deadlines. The successful candidate will have experience with polymers, conjugated polymers, organic synthesis, macromolecule separations, and analytical characterization with excellent attention to detail and ability to follow SOPs.

Job Description

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform synthesis of standard Sirigen products using standard air-sensitive techniques along established technical SOP’s.

  • Perform established reactions to convert/activate functional groups on final polymers

  • Perform a variety of polymer processing, purification and characterization steps to support the production of commercial dyes.

  • Characterize polymer size by GPC/SEC chromatography using established standard processes

  • Perform small scale dye labeling reactions according to established standard processes.

  • Perform functional testing to qualify raw material for use.

  • Work collaboratively with R&D, Process Development, Quality Control, and other Production Chemists/Supervisor to ensure successful transfer of new products into Production.

  • Lead or participate in Troubleshooting, Customer Complaint, and CAPA investigations.

  • Identifies, investigates, and implements process improvements for efficiencies and cost savings opportunities.

  • Develop, write, and edit existing SOPs; ensure validity and accuracy of information

  • Assist with work scheduling

  • Mentor and guide junior chemists in setting up, purifying and characterizing chemical reactions including assistance in data interpretation.

  • Assist to facilitate team meetings to communicate the timelines, testing and quality requirements, safety updates, and equipment maintenance.

  • Documentation in lab notebooks, batch records and basic databases

  • Promote a safe work environment. May provide recommendations on maintaining the safety of the work environment. Participates in Environmental Health and Safety programs.

  • Addresses corrective actions whenever a hazard is identified. Notifies supervisor of all observed hazardous conditions or unsafe work practices.

  • Other responsibilities or projects as assigned by reporting manager.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • MS degree (Chemistry strongly preferred) with 2+ years of experience in an industry synthetic chemistry lab OR/

  • BS degree (Chemistry strongly preferred) with 5+ years of relevant work experience.

ADDITIONAL AND PREFERRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working in a Glovebox is preferred.

  • Experience working in an ISO or QMS environment and with CAPA investigations is preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, effective written and oral communications skills.

  • Solid MS Office Knowledge, Intermediate to Advanced Excel usage, and proficiency in ChemDraw is required.

  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures is essential.

  • Must possess strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Be a self-starter, quick learner with the ability to work independently and efficiently.

  • Hands on team player with the ability to be proactive and work independently

  • Ability to influence others without direct reporting ties.

  • Strong ability to focus and work efficiently inside of a project oriented team.

  • Strong diagnostic, analytical and technical ability.

  • Demonstrated systematic problem solving.
