Program Objective/Scope

The BD Research & Development Summer Internship Program provides the student with an opportunity to partner with peers, senior personnel, and supervisors who provide informal mentoring and coaching. Students will have the opportunity to be exposed to our process of designing and developing technologies and products related to medical and/or interventional devices, in vitro diagnostics, and life science research for different global markets. Selected students may work with cross-functional or interdisciplinary teams and may have multiple internal partners and customers.

Each intern will have an individual project and the opportunity to develop technical engineering and scientific expertise. Through our summer internship, intern students develop an extensive professional network, learn how to work in a scientific and engineering environment, build hands-on laboratory skills, and deliver presentations showcasing their work. The summer internship program is a great opportunity to gain exposure to a fortune 500 biotechnology and medical device company and specifically, BD’s culture.

We are recruiting for a highly driven engineering/science students with a passion for technology and product development. The candidate is responsible for all relocation, housing, and transportation costs.

Sensor-enabled Solutions Internship

The selected candidate will be a contributor in the research and development of next-generation medical technologies in the Interventional and Medical Segments. The position is part of a team responsible for designing, prototyping, and testing new sensor- and software-enabled medical solutions, and analyze the sensor data to derive value.

Project Examples (projects may include lab-based tasks and remote-based tasks): selected intern will work as part of a multidisciplinary/multi-organizational team focused on developing new technologies that use sensors and software to deliver value for their users and other stakeholders. Projects will include technology conceptualization and prototyping, be it in hardware or in data collection and analysis. Work will involve one or several activities around design, prototyping, testing, and performance evaluation. Also expected from the candidate is to engage in skill building by guided self-learning of new tools, instruments, software, and methods. Preferred candidates will have some experience with electrical lab testing equipment and methods, Solidworks, and with data analysis methods and tools.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED:

  • The candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States without limitations and require no sponsorship for visa status now or in the future (e.g. H1-B status)

  • BS and/or MS/PhD students pursuing a degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Biomedical Engineering

  • Ability to work 40 hours per week for duration of the 10 to 12-week summer internship period

PREFERRED:

  • GPA minimum of 3.0

  • Previous Internship Experience

  • Hands-on prototyping & device assembly experience

  • BS Degree: Junior and Senior level Candidates

  • MS/PhD Degree: All levels are encouraged to apply.
