Job Description SummaryThe Staff Scientist reports directly to the Biological Sciences Manager and is responsible for delivering technical excellence in the area of applied biological sciences within the Integrated Diagnostics Systems R&D organization. Specific areas of focus include coagulation, clinical biochemistry, blood gases, hematology, and molecular diagnostics. The Staff Scientist will drive activities supporting the development, verification, and continued performance of IDS specimen management solutions for clinical diagnostic markets.

Job Description

The Staff Scientist reports directly to the Biological Sciences Manager and is responsible for delivering technical excellence in the area of applied biological sciences within the Integrated Diagnostics Systems R&D organization. Specific areas of focus include coagulation, clinical biochemistry, blood gases, hematology, and molecular diagnostics. The Staff Scientist will drive activities supporting the development, verification, and continued performance of IDS specimen management solutions for clinical diagnostic markets.

Responsibilities include:

  • Represent the R&D function as a Core or Extended Team member in support of large technology and product development programs.

  • Project leadership for projects of low to moderate complexity.

  • Provide technical leadership and expertise to programs and projects in assigned business areas which include a variety of discovery research, concept ideation, product development, and commercialization efforts.

  • Design and execute experiments using applied biological sciences that further the development, verification, and evidence generation efforts across all assigned programs and projects.

  • Document and build technical knowledge within assigned business areas; explore and recommend solution concepts and principles when applicable.

  • Own and drive key product development work streams including but not limited to Requirements Management, Design Verification, and Design Transfer to Manufacturing for applicable assignments.

  • Ensure program success by working cross functionally with R&D-Engineering, Marketing, Medical Affairs, Manufacturing, Quality and Regulatory Affairs.

  • Participate in intellectual property growth; submit patent applications and Invention Disclosure Records.

  • Work is performed with considerable latitude and without appreciable direction in determining technical objectives.

  • Travel as required to conferences, manufacturing sites, customer visits, etc.

Education:

  • Minimum of a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering, Cell/Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or related field is required. M.S. or Ph.D. strongly preferred.

Experience:

  • B.S. with 8+ years experience

  • M.S. with 5+ years experience

  • Ph.D. with 3+ years experience

Special Skills:

  • Expected to become proficient in the areas of coagulation, clinical chemistry, blood gases, hematology, and molecular diagnostics.

  • Experience in the area of biorheology, hemodynamics, and/or hemorheology is not required but highly desirable.

  • Experience with functional cell analysis and flow cytometry is not required but highly desirable.

  • General molecular and biochemical laboratory skills such as ELISA, immunoblotting, UV-VIS spectrophotometry, and basic chemistry (i.e. buffer preparation and pH adjustment) is required.

  • Experience with handling clinical specimens (particularly human blood) is desired; blood borne pathogen safety training is necessary and will be provided.

  • Must be proficient with MS Office and experience with statistical analysis tools is desired.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills. Must be comfortable with complex team matrices.

  • Strong learning agility.

  • Self-motivated with a strong sense of urgency and willing to take hands-on work.
