Job Description

A key objective of MDS Innovation & Architecture is to stimulate and lead concept and technology innovation spanning multiple platforms. To enable early-stage innovation, we have dedicated a BioDesign Innovation Team to identify customer needs, including those of the patient, hospital, physician, health system, etc. After gaining a deep understanding of needs through immersion with the customer, the team conceives, invents, prototypes and tests solutions targeted at those needs. The team is charged to identify opportunities that are new to the business, while being highly aligned with the long-term future of BD Medication Delivery Solutions (MDS).

The Innovation Team is composed of associates of diverse backgrounds: engineering / technical, clinical specialists, and business. The BioDesign Engineer brings specific capabilities to the team around:

  • identifying user needs, particularly those that may be unstated or subtle

  • applying a breadth of technical know-how to solve the needs

  • defining a technical approach and design for the solution

  • providing insights into technical feasibility and risk (technical rigor)

  • synthesizing fuzzy information and converge diverse inputs into new concepts

  • design and prototyping solutions

  • perform IP landscaping and generate new IP

The Front-end Innovation engineer is an individual who thrives in a small entrepreneurial team setting rather than a highly structured team. Team members will need to wear many hats, have good networking skills, be organized, and adaptable. The work will be fast-paced, with deadline-driven phases. Candidates must be customer-focused, good listeners, and skilled in non-biasing interview and observational techniques.

Positions on the BioDesign Team can be rotational roles. This means that team membership can change as scope changes. Team members with more BioDesign experience and tenure are expected to coach less experienced team members. It also enables team members to move into other roles in the organization as opportunities advance, and potentially follow them into product development. The length of time on the team can vary, but can range from several months to multiple years. It is expected that associates on the BioDesign Team play an active role in identifying new positions within the organization to take on after agreeing on timeframe.

In addition to what has been described above, the BioDesign Engineer will be expected to participate in, or lead:

  • Development of an in-depth understanding of the market trends

  • Customer Research

  • Ideation, Prototyping and Testing

  • Creative thinking and unique solutions to solve problems

  • Excellent communication skills, with proven ability to present complex ideas to multiple levels

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills

  • Strong facilitation and analytic skills with an open mind

  • Highly motivated self-starter able to achieve results with minimal oversight

  • Strong creative, analytical and problem solving skills required.
