BD Medication Delivery Solutions (MDS) is seeking a highly talented and passionate Staff Engineer for the role of R&D core team member to lead R&D product engineering activities in the Hazardous Drug Safety platform focused on improving the safety of drug preparation and delivery. The associate will be part of the systems engineering team with a focus on customer needs and requirements, then proceeding with design synthesis and design verification and validation activities. The candidate will help manage multiple projects and provide technical guidance to the team.
BD is seeking a special individual who has strong technical abilities and is able to lead and inspire R&D teams in the delivery of high quality technical plans, system requirements, and design verification and validation test methodologies. This leader needs to be very hands on implementing technical solutions, participating in designing and developing impactful medical device products.
Provide technical direction and leadership for design and development of product systems, subsystem and components by understanding design space with design options and tradeoffs, managing critical parameters, and have familiarity of manufacture principles as well as geometric dimensioning and tolerancing tools.
Serve as R&D core team member and lead system engineer supporting existing products and new line extensions.
Using sound system engineering principles, lead establishment of system and sub-system requirements for products based on a strong understanding of customer needs.
Ensure effective translation of system and sub-system requirements into product designs and design verification and validation testing.
Integrate product systems and subsystems to meet business objectives by addressing customer needs and product requirements under defined cost targets.
Identify the best tools and approaches to effectively solve engineering problems to develop/optimize designs by leveraging appropriate mix of first principles / analytical, computational and experimental methods.
Ensure implementation and rigor of phase gate product development processes and design control procedures.
Develop and apply innovative approaches to ensure the effective capture, retention and communication of technical knowledge generated (tacit & implicit).
Support evaluation and assessment of new technologies, intellectual property, products, processes and industry trends that can or have the potential to impact our business strategies.
Establish and maintain strong collaborative partnership with other BD R&D organizations, academic institutions and external partners, as appropriate, in order to leverage best-in-class technologies, solutions, methods and capabilities.
Support current products in terms of quality, manufacturing, supply continuity and cost improvement.
Lead execution of technical and/or cross-functional project work. Contribute to a culture of innovation by proactively generating novel concepts for new products and enhancements to current product performance.
Translate system and sub-system requirements into designs that lead to specific product, packaging, and process specifications.
Develop realistic and actionable design and development plans; demonstrate strong accountability for successful completion of R&D portions of projects/programs and team deliverables.
Ensure efficient and effective transition of technology development programs into design and development and then to high volume manufacturing (as appropriate).
Effectively lead and direct the work of other engineers and laboratory technicians.
Proactively develop, maintain and share technical knowledge in specialized area(s), remaining up-to-date on current trends and best practices. Actively lead, mentor and motivate team members and less-experienced associates, while also ensuring effective cross-functional communication and engagement.
Ensure compliance with BD quality policies, procedures and practices as well as with all local, state, federal and BD safety regulations, policies and procedures
Effectively communicate product development status to senior management.
The successful candidate will have a proven record of extensive product design and development and technical leadership in the medical device industry with a minimum of seven years of experience. In order to effectively lead strong technical teams, s/he should be well-versed in the execution of all aspects of product development including requirements management, design, development, verification and validation, transfer to manufacturing, and other aspects relevant to a final commercialized product. The candidate must have an understanding of requirements management, systems design, mechanical design and materials science.
The candidate must be a self-starter and have a strong work ethic. Experience as a creative problem solver, a passion for continuous improvement, and the ability to work independently and within a team setting are all required attributes. The candidate will have a reputation and record of effective cross-functional collaboration with peers, subordinates and superiors as well as outside advisors and customers.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes:
Successful track record of developing new medical device products.
Systems design for complex mechanical systems, including establishment of requirements and translation into system-level and detailed designs.
Development and implementation of design and development plans based on product requirements and customer needs.
Mechanical design including computer aided modeling and simulation
Design and development for high volume manufacturing
Demonstrated customer focus and engagement.
Technical project resourcing.
Demonstrated hands on R&D impact as an individual contributor in product development.
Deep understanding of disciplined product development through phase gate processes, regulatory and quality requirements

Design for Six Sigma (DFSS).
Experienced with statistical techniques related to product development including Minitab.
Experienced in Microsoft Project or equivalent project planning software.
Basic understanding of intellectual property (IP) processes.
Experience with high-volume manufacturing methods such as injection molding, ultrasonic welding and automated assembly and packaging processes
Strong understanding of manufacturing process validation including FAI/FAT, process development and IQ/OQ/PQ
Ability to work independently and think strategically.
Disciplined and well organized.
Demonstrated learning agility of new subject matter.
An undergraduate degree in an engineering field is required; an MS or Doctoral degree is highly preferred.
BS degree in an engineering discipline (mechanical, biomedical, materials); MS/PhD preferred
7+ years of engineering and technical leadership experience
