BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) Senior Electrical Process Engineer in Canaan, Connecticut

Job Description SummaryThe Senior Electrical Process Engineer rovides technical leadership for the ongoing operation of the Electron Beam Sterilization unit, the Shrinkwrap operation, product palletizing, and the shipping facility which operates 168 hours per week. Works in conjunction with the department production facilitator and associates, technically oversees the operation of electron beam sterilizers. Is a key driver in the design and implementation of process and efficiency improvements in a high speed, high volume manufacturing environment. Required to handle multiple assignments of varying scope and complexity. Oversees department maintenance program.

Job Description


  • Provide technical expertise for the department. Provide direction/assistance in troubleshooting (including set up and adjustment) and maintenance of all department systems (electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, etc.)

  • Understand the root cause of technical issues, develop a plan and implement a plan to address technical issues. Specifically focus on improving chronic levels of quality, waste and equipment efficiencies

  • Responsible to develop and implement plans for cost savings projects, productivity and safety improvements, including all aspects of the project from start to finish

  • Provides significant leadership for electrical processes, controls, and vision systems for new product/process developments.

  • Accountable for spending (capital and expense funding).

  • Directs the efforts of technical support personnel internal and external to the department to accomplish objectives.

  • Ability to handle projects of a moderate to large scope requiring extensive coordination.

  • Degree of Accountability(discretion/supervision)– works independently with little to no input required, reports to the logistics manager. Accountable for ensuring equipment is capable of meeting department objecti ves, c apital budgets, design outcomes and development and completion of cost savings projects.

  • Ensures that all equipment is safe to operate. Actively promotes and demonstrates commitment to safety.

  • Performs other duties as required by the logistics manager.


  • BS in Electrical Engineering

  • 5+ years of manufacturing experience or 10+ years of related experience

  • Clear understanding of the role of Engineering in a manufacturing environment

  • Must possess and have demonstrated leadership skills

  • Knowledge of proper engineering practices and vendor relationships

  • Experience with programming at all levels of PLC and PC based machine control systems

Additional and Preferred Skills and Qualifcations

  • Knowledgeable of ISO & FDA regulations and BD Quality policies

  • Knowledgeable in Six Sigma (Greenbelt or Blackbelt preferred)

  • Prior radiation facility or sterilization process experienceClear understanding of the role of Engineering in a manufacturing environment

  • Must possess and have demonstrated leadership skills

  • Knowledge of proper engineering practices and vendor relationships

  • Very strong computer skills

  • Interpersonal and communication (technical writing and presentation) skills

  • Knowledge of established safety standards and operator interface with equipment

  • Experience with vision system development and trouble shooting.

  • Proficient in electrical schematic design

  • Occasional mechanical design.

  • Ability to represent BD to external vendors and coordinate efforts between BD functions and vendors.
