BD Integrated Diagnostic Solutions develops solutions for patient management from the point of specimen acquisition through to diagnostic results and enterprise analytics for healthcare systems. The Vice President for Integrated Solution Technology supports the design, development and ultimate confirmation that solutions meet customer needs for the Integrated Diagnostic Solutions business unit.

The successful leader in this position is accountable for overseeing the efforts of around 100 BD associates and contractors responsible for the development of several significant strategic initiatives for the business including informatics solutions for Microbiology Instrumentation and Laboratory Automation, Point of Care Instrumentation, Molecular Instrumentation, Specimen Collection Dashboards, and Enterprise Analytics that cross all of the above . This effort spans R&D activities in, Sparks (Maryland), Limerick (Ireland), Drachten (Netherlands), Pont-de-Claix (France), as well as outsourced activities at partners around the globe. The incumbent will regularly critically assess organizational capability and capacity and implement adjustments in R&D skill mix by location as required. Delivery of integrated solutions is attained through the BD Synapsys platform, a large, scalable, web-based application serving the needs of clinical laboratories worldwide. The solution provides medical device connectivity, manages laboratory workflow, and advanced analytics for both single and multi-site organizations.

The platforms supported within this position’s span cover a complex set of hardware, software, informatics and microbiology and molecular biology workflow and informatics requirements that require a solutions-based approach for intra program coordination. This role is accountable for comprehensively and unambiguously defining solution workflows and analytics as well as ensuring all product offerings are formally tested as a system solution that meets/beats customer expectations. The role requires in-depth understanding of Engineering principles, BD IDS products and product development process. The incumbent will be responsible for development footprint analysis and recommend organizational designs to ensure efficient and cost-effective solution development. In addition, the accountable individual must track and implement key emerging market trends for diagnostic testing, informatics, laboratory automation, and development and validation tools. The position holder provides engineering guidance to the business that helps establish key automation strategies and their implementations. This person must have a demonstrated ability to integrate across various technical, organizational and geographic/cultural boundaries to achieve the successful implementation of multiple business platform strategies. This role is the primary Software Development presence on the Informatics Governance team, a team charged with the strategic leadership and governance of Synapsys.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Provide leadership, optimal staffing, and overall management of software development, analysts, systems, and solution test R&D teams located at our Sparks, MD, Drachten, and Limerick sites.

  • Recruit/Select best in class talent and leaders (functional and program) for key software and solutions technology development capability. A capable assessor of talent, able to recruit and build excellence in technology and product development across the defined portfolio.

  • Establish strategy and direction for integrated solution technology development and insource/outsource activities in coordination with the WW VP of R&D for Integrated Diagnostic Solutions and in alignment with strategic plans established by IDS executive leadership.

  • Demonstrate managerial ambidexterity by appropriately balancing the long-term innovation with the short term product development.

  • Create and execute capability/capacity and organizational alignment plans and actions to optimally organize across R&D Engineering sites and disciplines, ongoing, as project and technology needs emerge and change over time. Routinely evaluate department capacity and capability relative to total demand for engineering & software capability and advise business leadership accordingly. Complete hiring manager activities as required.

  • Proactively identify customer, technologies and/or market trends in lab automation, diagnostic medical equipment, and informatics. Must be agile in redirecting R&D efforts to generate business value. Serves as a consultant to management on technology trends and risks.

  • Accountable for managing priorities of associate activity across lab automation, product engineering, and informatics projects based on input from the business. Develop and administer performance expectations for lab automation and ensure compliance to budget.

  • Identifies synergistic strategic opportunities with development partners to execute on platform agendas while reducing overall BD investments.

  • Develop and maintain key senior relationships with strategic development and contract engineering firms to optimize business opportunities for BD

  • Interpret and administer policies, processes and procedures related to integrated solution technology development and delivery

  • Ensure cross functional alignment with diagnostic capabilities/claims through medical/regulatory

  • Working with Quality and Regulatory, guide the engineering organization related to cross site work processes and adherence to quality systems.

  • Interact internally and externally with executive level management.

  • Ensure compliance to applicable site quality and regulatory systems and requirements.

  • Influence policy making for new product development and product life cycle management related to lab automation, informatics and Product Engineering

  • Conduct technical due diligence of business opportunities including evaluation of partner and customer development proposals on issues of diverse scope for fit with existing platform capability and recommend design options to realize product development objectives.

  • Participate on local or business leadership teams as appropriate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • B.S. in Engineering. M.S in Engineering or Engineering Management required; PhD preferred. Minimum of fifteen years relevant experience with at least ten years of applicable managerial experience in R&D management at a suitable leadership level with strong people development and delegation skills.

  • Demonstrated strategic mindset to complement (and/or constructively challenge) our business leaders on infectious diagnostic strategy (can spot and create solutions for unmet needs in the IVD market), and is able to readily offer novel technology solutions to difficult business, platform, or technical problems.

  • Has managed a large R&D organization instrumentation to support developing NAAT assays, or microbiology assays, and has taken that organization to the next level of performance, demonstrating the ability to develop multiple assays or systems at once to meet the criteria of our syndromic approach (assay bundles) to product development

  • Can further BD’s strategic messaging and credibility surrounding systems that support Molecular Assays, Microbiology assays and methods, screening, molecular POC, and other vectors of penetration in the market categories.

  • Experience with in vitro diagnostic development and troubleshooting

  • Experience with training, mentoring and teaching in a highly technical environment

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills are essential

  • Demonstrated capability as member of project team and leader of a project team

  • Demonstrated capability with project management methodologies and tools. Experience running a program office preferred

  • Demonstrated capability of managing customer expectations, both internal and external, including frequent interactions/presentations with VIP customers and symposiums

  • Deep knowledge of BD’s Global Product Development System (GPDS) process.

  • Domain knowledge of laboratory automation equipment, Micro/Molecular diagnostics instrumentation, and informatics.

  • Microbiology laboratory workflow

  • Direct experience managing large software project teams serving the diagnostic industry, preferably extensive experience with laboratory middleware software development
